As has become tradition, once more blogging my short-list of picks from this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival.
Last year, I only saw Moon. There wasn’t much else that interested me, that I hadn’t already seen.
But first, two noticeable omissions in this year’s line-up.
I’m very surprised not to see Chernaya Molniya (Black Lighting), the latest production from Russian superstar Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch/Day Watch/Wanted) on the list. It’s such a fun movie, keep an eye out for it.
I’m frankly shocked that the Bill Hicks documentary American is nowhere to be seen; especially since it is screening at the Perth International Film Festival. I thought for sure, given Melbourne’s love of Bill Hicks, that it would be screening. Guess I’ll have to wait for it to appear on DVD.
On to the films that are actually showing.
The two must-see’s:
- Splice – Vincenzo Natali’s latest. The criminally under-appreciated Canadian director, who’s so far given us Cube, Cypher and Nothing.
- Space Tourists – “From shuttle-scavengers scouring the earth for fallen rocket parts, to an Iranian-American tycoon’s extravagant adventure to the stars, Space Tourists weighs up the cost of following your dreams to infinity and beyond.” YES!
